Hide Camp: Traditional Deer Hide Tanning
November 4, 6–8, 2026
20 hours of hands-on instruction
Learn the traditional art of brain tanning deer hides in this four-day workshop. Whether you're new to hide tanning or looking to deepen your skills, you'll work through each stage of the process with plenty of hands-on practice and individualized instruction.
Throughout the workshop, participants will learn how to transform a deer hide into soft, durable buckskin. Topics include hide preparation, fleshing, wet and dry scraping techniques, brain tanning (with discussion of egg tanning as an alternative), wringing, softening, and smoking. Instructors will also demonstrate hide salting and preservation techniques so you'll understand how to prepare hides for future tanning projects.
Everyone will have the opportunity to work closely with instructors, ask questions, and gain confidence in each step of the process.
